Commercial and Institutional Structural Engineering

Rise Structural Group is the structural engineer of record for new commercial and institutional buildings across Pittsburgh, western and central Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Maryland. We work for architects, developers and design-build contractors who want a structural partner that keeps the building simple to build and on budget without compromising the architecture.

Building types

  • Office buildings and corporate headquarters
  • Retail centers, showrooms and restaurants
  • Medical office buildings, clinics and outpatient facilities
  • Schools, colleges and training facilities
  • Churches, pavilions and community buildings
  • Clubhouses, fitness and recreation buildings
  • Hotels and hospitality
  • Light industrial, flex and warehouse buildings

Structural systems

Structural steel with composite deck, moment frames and braced frames; reinforced concrete and masonry; wood and heavy timber; cold-formed steel bearing wall and backup wall systems; pre-engineered metal buildings with conventional additions; precast and tilt-up concrete. We pick the system that fits the building and the local market, not the one we used last time.

What we deliver

  • Schematic structural narratives and system comparisons with cost implications
  • Design development and construction documents in Revit, coordinated with architectural and MEP models
  • Sealed drawings, calculations and specifications for permit and bidding
  • Delegated design review for connections, CFS, trusses and precast
  • Submittal review, RFI responses and site visits through construction

How we approach a project

We join early, when the column grid, floor-to-floor height and lateral system are still open, because those decisions set the structural cost. We design cantilevers, long spans and expressive elements when the architecture calls for them and we are candid about what they cost. Our drawings are detailed for the way contractors in this region actually build, which means fewer RFIs and change orders in the field.
