Retaining Wall, Foundation and Site Structure Design

Western Pennsylvania is built on hillsides. Almost every project here needs to hold back soil somewhere, and when a wall is over four feet or carries a surcharge, the municipality wants a sealed design. Rise Structural Group designs retaining walls, foundation walls and site structures for contractors, builders, site civil engineers and owners across Pittsburgh, western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia.

Walls we design

  • Cast-in-place concrete cantilever retaining walls
  • Reinforced CMU retaining and basement walls
  • Segmental block (SRW) walls with geogrid reinforcement
  • Soldier pile and lagging walls
  • Basement and foundation walls with unbalanced fill
  • Tiered wall systems
  • Walls carrying driveways, parking, buildings and slopes as surcharge

Related site and foundation work

  • Foundation design for garages, accessory buildings, pavilions and equipment
  • Shotcrete and concrete pool shells on sloped sites
  • Foundation repair and underpinning for settlement, bowing walls and water damage
  • Stair, ramp and landing foundations
  • Light pole, sign and fence foundations
  • Dock walls and loading dock pits

What you receive

Sealed drawings and calculations suitable for permit submission, with wall sections, reinforcing, drainage details and backfill requirements. Where a site has a geotechnical report we design to it; where it does not, we design to code presumptive values and say so, and we recommend a geotechnical engineer when the wall height or site conditions warrant it. Global stability is addressed in coordination with the geotechnical engineer.

Fast and predictable

Most residential and small commercial walls are designed and sealed within one to two weeks from receipt of the site survey or grading plan. We give fixed fees up front.

Recent work

Apex Newbury Pool, Bridgeville, PA: a shotcrete amenity pool on a hillside site with a reinforced shell designed for water pressure and soil pressure. We also design CMU retaining and foundation walls for detached garages and additions throughout the North Hills and Pittsburgh, and retaining walls supporting parking areas and building pads for commercial sites.

Who we work with

Landscape and hardscape contractors, excavation contractors, home builders, site civil engineers, architects, commercial developers and homeowners.
